New Year, New Novel, New Baby

I've started this year by taking three months part-time from work. So until the end of March Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings are my own. It's fun! I've made a really good start into the first of my two dark fantasy novels for Night Shade Books, THE DEAD OF NIGHT: DUSK. It's set in an alternate world and I'm having huge fun with it, creating whole new characters, societies, inebriating drinks, creatures, beliefs, drugs, religions ... and on and on.

I'm finding the freedom of not writing to Earthly constraints very satisfying. I'm aiming to get the first book delivered to Night Shade in June, and it should see the light of day early next year. Meantime, there'll be a dedicated The Dead of Night website launching soon, with extracts and artwork and a whole load of stuff. There'll be a link from this site as and when the new site launches.

I've sold a couple of short stories lately: 'Making Sense' will appear in a future issue of Cemetery Dance Magazine. 'The Last Good Times' will appear in the Taverns of the Dead anthology from CD, edited by Kealan-Patrick Burke. 'Die For Me' has been accepted for Family Plots, an anthology edited by Randy Wiggins and due soon from Wild Rose Publications, a new Australian outfit.

I've also sold a novella to Night Visions 11, edited by Bill Sheehan and due to be published by Subterranean Press sometime this year. I'm delighted with this sale! Night Visions is a very distinguished series, and having Kim Newman and Lucius Shepherd as my fellow contributors is very exciting!

As well as DUSK, I'm also working on EXORCISING ANGELS, a collaborative novella with Simon Clark, and another couple of short stories for anthology markets.

Last but not least, I'm to be a Dad again in July! Our second kiddie is due on my birthday, July 28th. Which is very conveniently placed just a month after my delivery date for DUSK.

Delivery dates, delivery dates...
