Here's a great review for THE EVERLASTING! You'll need to scroll down a bit ...
I watched an episode of Nigel Kneale's BEASTS last night . It was BABY, an episode I watched when I was about 12 and which scared the living crap out of me back then. Last night, it scared the living crap out of me again. Some dodgy acting, for sure, but the big reveal at the end is the most unpleasant and disturbing I can remember. Ever.
Still shuddering .......

You can check out a new quick interview with me HERE.
I'm thrilled to announce that Subterranean Press will be publishing AFTER THE WAR: Two Tales of Noreela in early 2008. This book will contain two novellas set in my alternate world of Noreela: THE BAJUMAN was serialised on www.noreela.com 18 months ago, and VALE OF BLOOD ROSES is a brand new novella. There will also be an introduction from me, talking about my inspirations for Noreela and these novellas in particular.
I'm very excited to be working with Subterranean Press on this project. You can find more details on the dedicated Noreela website.
VALE OF BLOOD ROSES, a new novella set in my alternate world of Noreela, will appear in issue 8 of Subterranean Magazine! I'm thrilled about this. It's quite a dark novella (what did you expect?), quite strange, about a band of mercenaries immediately after the Cataclysmic War. I'm very pleased with it, and I'm glad it's found such a good home.
I wrote half of this novella travelling to and from Toronto for the World Horror Convention, sitting next to Mark Morris as he worked on his Doctor Who novel. So who says it's impossible to work on 'planes?
There'll also be some more exciting news about Subterranean Press very soon, so keep checking back!

Here are details of an Arthur Machen celebration I'm taking part in:
Thursday 5 July 2007 IWA Gwent Branch and Academi 6.30 pm (cost £5.00 to include a glass of wine) University of Wales Caerleon, Newport An evening chaired by Lionel Fanthorpe celebrating the life and work of Arthur Machen: Master of Holy Terrors
“I shall always esteem it as the greatest piece of fortune that has fallen to me, that I was born in that noble, fallen Caerleon-on-Usk, in the heart of Gwent.” Arthur Machen
Arthur Machen (1863-1947) joined together unspeakable fears and wonders with Roman Isca, Victorian London, the Holy Grail, and the Gwent countryside. He has been admired by Oscar Wilde, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Iain Sinclair, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and Sir John Betjeman. Now in the 60th anniversary of his death a sculpture is being erected to honour him. Join a panel of fantasy writers to explore Machen’s world of terror and wonder. Find out why they and Stephen King, Clive Barker and HP Lovecraft consider Machen to be amongst the greatest writers of all time of tales of supernatural horror and fantasy. Hear why Machen wrote what has been called the most decadent book in the English language, The Hill of Dreams. Learn how Machen was the first novelist to place the Holy Grail in a modern setting - 100 years before Dan Brown. For more information visit Friends of Arthur Machen. www.machensoc.demon.co.uk and Celf Caerleon Arts Festival 2007 - www.caerleon-arts.org.
Simon Clarke, from Doncaster, won the 2001 British Fantasy award for The Night of the Triffids, sequel to John Wyndham’s novel. Other titles include Blood Crazy, Darker, Vamphyrrhic, The Fall and The Dalek Factor.
Catherine Fisher is an award winning children’s writer from Newport. Her novels include Book of the Crow, Darkhenge, Snow-walker, and The Oracle Betrayed which was finalist for the Whitbread Children’s Book Award, while The Candle won the Tir-Na-n’Og Award 2002.
Gwilym Games, also from Newport, is editor of Machenalia, one of the journals of Friends of Arthur Machen, which was a finalist for a World Fantasy Award in 2006. An expert on Machen he has been responsible for the organisation of the 2007 commemorative sculpture.
Tim Lebbon, from Newport, has won two British Fantasy Awards, a Bram Stoker Award and a Tombstone Award. His novella White is shortly to be adapted to the big screen. He collaborated with Simon Clark on the Machen-inspired Exorcising Angels.
Lionel Fanthorpe is an ordained anglican priest and entertainer. He has worked as a journalist, teacher, television presenter, author and lecturer. He has written 250 books. He is president of the the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena and the British UFO Research Association.
This afternoon I typed THE END on my new fantasy novel, FALLEN. This is set in the same world as DUSK and DAWN, though it's not directly linked to those books (though readers of the first two will recognise some place names, flora and fauna). So tonight for me it's a bottle of wine and a good movie.
But my good mood is tempered every time I watch the news. I'm hoping they find poor little Madeleine McCann safe and sound, and soon. Even trying to imagine what her and her family are going through is horrendous.

I've been a fan of Dan Simmons since I read that stunning opening sentence to HYPERION maybe eighteen years ago. He's something of an inspiration, writing whatever his heart chooses - horror, science fiction, crime, suspense, historical novels - and anything he writes is always gripping and fascinating. He's one of those people - every writer can name a few - who makes me wonder why I bother ... but who also fills me with a burning urge to get back to the keyboard.
Last night I finished his latest novel THE TERROR. It's taken me a long time to read - it was a hell of a big book - but I treasured every page. And it's one of his best, no doubt about it. It's beautiful, painful, heartbreaking and challenging, and he's created something masterful. Make sure you buy it. Instantly.
My new horror novel THE EVERLASTING is out now in mass market paperback from Leisure Books. You can buy it in all the usual places - online dealers, and all good bookshops in the USA and Canada - and if you want to check out an extract, see the Bibliography section of this site. I'm currently working on THE EVERLASTING with a producer in LA, so pick it up while it's hot!
I spent last weekend in Leicester and Derby, giving a 2 hour workshop on Friday in Leicester and attending the Alt.Fiction event in Derby on Saturday. Both were a lot of fun. Saturday I joined fellow scribes and good friends Mark Morris, Sarah Pinborough, Pete Crowther, Ramsey Campbell, Mark Chadbourn, Gary Gry, Gary McMahon, Steve Lockley, Steve Gallagher, Adam Nevill and many, many others giving talks, readings and drunken rambles in Derby's Assembly Rooms. I also had a couple of fanboy moments, first when I found myself sitting next to Harry Harrison whilst we listened in rapt awe to Jenny Campbell's ghost story, and secondly at the bar late in the evening when I shook hands with Iain Banks. What a day ....!
