I enjoy football about as much as I enjoy getting sunburn. But I do like a good joke:

Anyway, it's been a good week. On Tuesday I typed THE END on my new novel, DESOLATION. Still have an intensive month of editing, revisions and rewriting before delivering to Leisure and Borderlands Press, but just getting that far was a huge thrill, and something of a relief. It's been a good start to my part-time writing ... the bulk of that novel was written in less than three months. Did a couple of short stories and a movie treatment in that time as well, so it's three months well spent.
So what did I do to celebrate? Well, I'm my own boss now ... for half the week, at least ... so I went up the pub for a couple of pints of Abbott Ale, some grub, and an hour reading Peter Straub's incredible 'lost boy lost girl'. What a life!
The same day, a box of contributor copies of NIGHT VISIONS 11 arrived. Bloody hell .... I had to sit down and have a good look at that cover, just making sure my name really was on it. Night Visions! Fuck sake. But yes, I'm in there, along with the brilliant Kim Newman and Lucius Sheperd. Nice one!
AND AGAIN on the same day, I had a very hopeful email about another project which I'm not even going to begin talking about here yet. If it happens, believe me, it'll be posted all across my website. So as ever ... WATCH THIS SPACE!
I've just arrived back from the Stoker Awards in New York. What a great city! 'Buzzing' is a word that does little to emphasise just how alive that city is. The city that never sleeps is the correct name (and indeed, at 3:00 in the morning with sirens screaming by and cars screeching along streets, I wanted to rename it The City that Never Lets Anyone Sleep).
The weekend went by in a haze of conversations. I caught up with a lot of old friends there, and made a lot of new ones, and as is so often the case the best business was done at 2:00 in the morning, drunk, at some party or other.
Highlights included meeting Chris Golden and Jim Moore, and having many long, probably illegal chats; meeting Mike Mignola briefly before the Award Ceremony; being introduced to the Leisure crowd and shown around their offices; lunch with the wonderful Don D'Auria and the lovely Leah from Leisure; lots of good Jameson's whiskey on the Saturday evening; meeting the delightful and remarkable Monteleones; meeting Rich SanFilippo, spending Sunday afternoon wandering around Greenwich Village, and passing my final couple of hours in the Big Apple having a few beers.
Low points ...? Well, coming home and not being able to sleep for two days flat, and coming back to work.
But ... it was a fantastic weekend. The Horror Writers' Assiciation is thriving, and this weekend was probably one of the best Stoker Conferences on record (thanks in no small part to Monica O'Rourke).

Yesterday I received my copies of 'Dead Man's Hand' in the post. This is my new horror western novella from Necessary Evil Press. It's a gorgeous book, the best chapbook I've ever seen, and I'm absolutely thrilled! A big thanks to Don Koish for making this such a special book. If you want one they're close to selling out from the publisher, so check with the usual dealers to see if they have any copies left.
I'm just back from New York, where I picked up the June issue of FANGORIA (this is the 25th anniversay issue). It contains a great one-page interview with me conducted by Don Kaye, and here's a big thanks to Don for arranging that for me.
DEAD MAN'S HAND is out now! I've had my copies and it's a gorgeous looking book, the best chapbook I've ever seen. Caniglia's artwork is just stunning; the lettered is going to be something special. The book is selling fast (lettereds are gone, limited almost gone) so check with the usual dealers if you want one (they're listed on my Links page).
I've almost finished my new novel DESOLATION in first draft. Delivery date is the end of July, and I had long discussions with Don at Leisure about the cover ... it's going to look very nice! So, between now and then I may have to forget about sleep while I rewrite and tinker with the novel.
